First of all, you should know that this is a Seventh-Day Adventist institution. It is however, one of the more liberal of Seventh-Day Adventist universities. Most professors will not bug you about being of another religious back ground. I attended one of the smaller departments and was very pleased with the education. I was also pleased with the open mindedness of my professors. Not ever department is the same. And not every professor. Chapel attendance is required but you can skip and get away with it if you are friends with the dean of your department.
Loma Linda University has strong medical programs but some of the other departments a lax. I had a decent time there. I respected my professors and friendships were easily acquired.
The biggest cons about this school all have to do with the location. It is near San Bernardino which is the armpit of California. Smog from LA is blown towards this area and gets caught between San Gorgonio and San Jacinto mountains sitting right above the school. Also, it is not a pedestrian friendly area. However, the climate is nice year round and picking oranges in the park in February is awesome.
I would recommend this school if you are already accustome to Souther California lifestyle. That is, lots of driving/ siting in traffic, going to chain restaurants and taking out plenty of loans.
When P.T. Barnum donated money to Tufts University, he did so on the condition that the school's mascot be named after his beloved elephant. The Tufts University mascot has been the "Jumbos" ever since.
