Lawrence Tech is a good university to go to if you are only concerned about getting a degree. For example, if you are returning to school, only attending after work / evening classes, etc.
If you are looking for a 'true college experience' (e.g. staying in a dorm, attending on-campus events, participating in extracurriculars, hanging out on campus, etc.) you might be better off to go to a larger college or a public university (MSU, Wayne State, Oakland, Western Michigan, etc.).
Tuition is expensive and increases pretty regularly. In terms of prestige and recognition the college may be well known in the Detroit area because of the automotive industry (especially for engineering), but it does not carry very far beyond that.
The Colleges of Architecture and Design, Engineering, and Management are by far the most highly supported and financed by the school. If you attend for liberal arts or the sciences (Computer Science, Economics, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, etc.) you will notice much less support and appreciation from the departments or the school (e.g. research projects, high quality professors, conferences/talks/industry events, career placement/assistance, etc.) as compared to the other Colleges of the school.
I am 50/50 on my satisfaction with deciding to go to LTU. I have had some good opportunities and the instruction has been mostly useful, but it is disappointing if you are looking for something more than just attending class. I am also disappointed in the amount of money it costs to attend ($40,000 - $60,000) when you look at the (lack of) benefits of attending (compare with e.g. Oakland University, which has just as good quality teaching, more extracurriculars, more research opportunities, etc. and is half the price per credit hour). |
