Iona is mainly a commuter school, although I stayed on campus. The weekends were relatively quiet, and I got to know the other dormers quite well. Of the housing facilities, I enjoyed Rice Hall the most. These had single rooms - which, ironically, allowed us to make friends easier because everyone was forced to branch out. Doors were left open most of the time.
The classes ranged from poor to excellent, as they do in any college. Once I got a handle for the professors, I really started to enjoy my time there. The majority of the student body is impossible to avoid, however, and half are still buzzed from the night before.
The class sizes are small, which is wonderful. I was never in a class of more than 30, with the average being about 20. I felt like I always had access to the professors - which is not common in all colleges.
If you can, join the honors program. It's worth it - and you get to avoid some of the students who make class difficult for everyone.
The school's location is unique. It's only about ten minutes away from trains running to New York City, but the ten minute drive is through a poor neighborhood. The rest of the area is as rich as you can get. New Roc City, an entertainment complex, is pretty close, but it can get old after a few visits.
Since I have been gone, the school has updated its meal program. It now includes stores and restaurants along North Avenue, which is totally amazing.
Lastly, while I enjoyed the housing situation, I was upset that they only provide housing for two years. After that, you're on your own. This added much stress to the end of that second year. My friends and I got a house (barely) and it was a bit run down. Keep this in mind as you enter that second year. |
