Indiana University, in my opinion, is one of the best overall college in Indiana. First off, Bloomington a great college town that appreciates the university. The education is excellent and is a very diverse community. They have renowned school programs such as Kelley School of Business and the Jacob School (Music). It is a very big school and you will meet some interesting people and make life-long friendships being there.
Aside from academics, there is always something to do in that town. First off, the athletic department. That town lives and breathes IU basketball with its rich tradition. The soccer team is one of the nation's best, and the football program is on the upside making improvements every year. There are a lot of public parts and the campus is beautiful always giving you something to do outside. As far as night life, it's just like you would expect from any big school. Great parties from houses, apartments, dorms, to greek life. The bars are always fun as well. You can find cheap specials and there are always people out.
Some cons I can think of, is the attention from the professors. Depending on the class, it can be tough to get professors attention. I've had lectures with 200+ people, so I can understand that. In smaller classes I've taken, the professor are much more accessible and more attentive. Another con that I have, but it's my fault is that I didn't study abroad. IU offers excellent abroad programs all over the world. I've had many friends do that and they've had an amazing time. My advice is do it in college when you have the chance. It is fairly inexpensive, you go with a lot of people you know, and you are still getting credits out of the way. Trust me, it's worth going somewhere for one semester.
Overall, I highly recommend going to Indiana University - Bloomington. You will have the time of your life, and will miss it immensely when you leave, but you have to grow up sometime. I will always remember the time I spent at Indiana University. |

The biggest problem with Indiana University is that the undergraduate program largely is not taught by real professors but by graduate students. This was very misleading because when you sign up for a class the full professor's name is listed as the instructor often. The full professor appears for the first class and then hands it off to the graduate student. This is a very poor value for your money and time, and a wasteful education. The professors are paid a salary to teach and they should be working doing just that. But they conceal this to the students and parents paying the bills.
The very good part about Indiana University was that it was located in a town without any other distractions from school, however it was so heavy into sports including closing down campus services and the library when there was a sports events, you have to wonder what the real purpose of the college is, after all.
As for the dorms, the best to stay in is Eigenmann Hall. It has everything you need right there. I would avoid renting apartments and houses from landlords within walking distance of the school. If you have a car, you can get much better apartment selections and prices a mile or more from campus. As for living on campus, don't bring a car, its useless and the campus police give out so many tickets which are at least $35.00 and up, they have become self-funding. This means, they are going to continue to give out tickets. Even with a faculty parking permit, it is more of a hunting permit for parking. Again, a car on campus is useless, you are must better off taking the campus bus.
Transportation for the town, such as bus services outside of the car is pretty limited, you will need a car.
