I am a transfer student, a Georgia resident, a nursing major, and a commuter student. It is an especially great deal financially for those who are Georgia residents. One of the best parts of the university is that it is in the city of Atlanta. I love all the little restaurants and culture that is plentiful around Atlanta. There are several great programs here: nursing, business, neuroscience, education, music, etc. One of the best things about Georgia State is that you can probably take all your classes without having Friday classes. Only a few classes such as Spanish and Chemistry are on Fridays. I commute to school by the MARTA train. One thing about this college is that if you are not African-American, you are a minority. That is not a bad thing, but all the campus activities are primarily geared toward African-American culture. I also have heard some students refer to other students as "that white kid." However, what I love about this college is that there are people of all backgrounds here. If you are a freshman looking for a great football program and a pretty traditional college campus, this school is not for you. |

I graduated from GSU in December 2003, but didn't receive my diploma until August 2004, and that's a great example of what to expect of all of the administrative services if you're a student at Georgia State.
If you need to speak with someone in Financial Aid, don't even bother calling because they will not answer the phone, especially if it's during the first two-three weeks of the semester. If you manage to wait in line long enough to get to the desk and actually talk to someone, be prepared to be asked for something you're not going to have. I don't know how many times I waited in line only to be told that I needed to have this and that form filled out, 8 copies of an ID, birth and death certificates, the works.
The Greek scene is a joke if you're into that sort of thing, I wasn't. Rather than houses, they each have a room in one of the buildings.
Sports as GSU are also a joke. Very few people attend any of the sporting events. Even when the basketball team made the round of 32 in the NCAA Tournament a few years ago, hardly any of the students even took notice.
It's primarily a concrete campus, so when classes are over for the day, students get out of town as quickly as possible. Busta Rhymes had a concert at GSU when I was there, and from what I understand, fewer than 200 people actually showed up despite it being advertised for weeks on radio and television.
I dual-majored in Sociology and Psychology, and I really think that these two departments had great faculties. I started out as a Journalism major, but many of the professors were rude and gave that "Better Than Thou" attitude, and I really didn't like how they treated the students. The Psychology program also has a very nice clinic that students can get treatment if ever necessary.
The Recreation Center is easily the best facility offered by GSU. It's paid for with student fees, therefore all you have to do is prove you're a student and you can get in. So get rid of that gym membership as quickly as you can. |
