Georgia Tech is a very serious academic institution. As a student in high school I never had to study, never opened a book and I graduated with a GPA that was higher than a 4.0 (due to AP courses that awarded me more credit) and made a 1450 on my SAT (back when it was just two parts). The thing I quickly learned is that Georgia Tech is a research institution, not a University. The Professors teach because they have to, not because they want to. They make the vast majority of their money by doing research.
You have to be willing to learn on your own there, take the initiative and teach yourself. They certainly aren't going to hold your hand if you are struggling.
Now that I'm in the "real world" I have learned that this is the reason a Degree from Georgia Tech is so valuable. The people that know of the school's reputation will put you in a league of your own. They know that you are capable of thinking outside the box and doing what it takes to find an answer on your own.
I would certainly recommend anyone that is interested in getting a degree in Engineering, Technology or Science related field to seriously consider going there, I hear the Management program is getting much stronger as well. I had the time of my life and you also have the luxury of living in a great city, Atlanta.
The Greek life, even though I wasn't part of it, seemed like a very tightly knit community and the sporting events were always a blast. I would go back there in a heartbeat and I'm actually considering going there to get my Masters Degree as well. |

I came to Georgia Tech on a scholarship, expecting it to be a school that really exposed new ideas and challenges. However, it wound up being like any other school, and even worse. The stoic lecture environment is hardly capable of sparking innovation and new ideas, and it's not until senior year before you even get close to creating something new and exciting. The left-brained mentality on the campus leaves those artistic minds withered and useless. It is a difficult school, but not at the expense of teaching difficult things; it's hard for the sake of being hard, which is not really a positive thing.
Even so, it's located in the middle of Atlanta, and as long as you get off campus you will have plenty of fun. The campus male to female ratio winds up lowering guys' standards, but luckily Georgia State is right across the street. The campus has become very polarized politically, slightly liberal for a southern school, and routinely infringes on the rights of conservatives and Christians.
It does have a few positive things. It is still a good name, and very high-tier recruiters look for future employees there. The co-op program is amazing; the people in that office work hard to match you to the perfect co-op job. The campus is usually well maintained. If you enjoy community service, Atlanta provides a ton of opportunities for that. It has a diverse student body for a southern school.
Overall, if you're looking for true education, the trading and discovering of ideas, and a well-rounded philosophy of education, Georgia Tech will likely disappoint you. If you're looking for a fun, easy college experience, you can always have fun off-campus, but for the easiness you'll need to look elsewhere. If you're looking for a good name on your diploma, and the chance at working for some of the higher-tech jobs, you will definitely get that. |
