While I've also attended the University of Georgia as both an undergraduate and a grad student, I spent most of my undergraduate career at and graduated from Georgia College. If I could figure out a way to do it, I'd be there still. One of the sadder days in my life was the day I graduated and had to leave G.C.
Coming from a huge state university that was spread out over miles and miles, I found the smaller, more intimate size of Georgia College to be much more in tune with my needs. I lived on campus and walked to class. Most classes were fairly small, and most of my instructors were full or associate professors, not grad students. That doesn't sound like such a big deal, unless you've experienced the reverse where all your classes are taught in auditoriums seating 300+ students, and they're taught by a bored grad student who's only doing it to earn his own tuition.
Once I got around to declaring a major and concentrating on those courses, I found myself in a smaller, even more intimate setting. I tended to have the same group of teachers over and over, and most of my classmates were the same people too. I'm not a social creature, but in that setting I developed friendships that have lasted more than 20 years. There's a lot to be said for the encouragement of a supportive peer group when you're studying.
Georgia College is not the most resource rich place in the University of Georgia system. It's small, and that sometimes means thinner resources in some areas. It's not where I'd go, for instance, if I wanted to be a Veterinarian or a lawyer. However, it is large enough, especially now, to offer a decent liberal arts education. |
