George Mason University main campus in Fairfax, VA is easily assessible by public transport and has ample research and infrastructure (labs, libraries). I loved the mix of students and working professionals in each of the courses I took there. Teachers are industry-aware and look at infusing latest trends in technology and integrating studies with real-life problems/situations.
Pros : Industry aware teachers/proximity to the Washington D.C/located in Fairfax,VA.
Cons : None |

I attended GMU between 1996-1998. It was an outstanding experience. I would advise anyone considering this college to visit the campus during the school year, to get a feel for the size and buzz around the campus. It is a very busy, very international atmosphere. I wholly recommend attending this university, and would definitely choose to go there again. The pros of this school are its cultural diversity and cutting edge technological advancements. The only con is that there is a large commuter population (which some may feel is a good thing), and that tends to give the university a more mature feel. |

I was pleasantly surprised with the quality of the professors in the Computer Science program at GMU... on par with my undergrad professors at University of Virginia.
It's been an underrated school for a long time, but last season when the mens basketball team made it to the Final Four a lot of people took notice. (leading to a more selective admissions process this year)
I definitely recomment going there, especially for their engineering school. Then come out to support coach Larranaga and the team!

This college isn't a particularly good college for several aspects- first of all, the lodgings and facilities are often insufficiant, in my case, in one of the areas I was assigned (the student apartments) the ceiling in the shower was less than an inch above the top of my head, and I had to squat down (there was not enough room to even kneel!) just to get water on my head. Secondly, nothing interesting ever happens. This probably won't be a problem if you join a frat, but there are little to no community events worth going to. There are events from time to time, and even special events on fridays, but most of them are uninspired and utterly boring. Finally, and perhaps most important, many of their teachers are below the level. They intentionally give freshmen some of the worse teachers in an attempt to weed out many of them in order to make more money. From what I have experianced, their CS and Physics departments are basically a joke. They have good people in physics, but more often than not they intentionally set the standards too high and test on materials that are not mentioned, failing more than %50 of those who initially sign up. |
