Florida State University has a reputation as a party school and to be honest it's not undeserved. This is something to keep in mind when looking at it as a possible stop in your educational path. My experience in both the philosophy program and the business program was overall positive. Instructor quality varies, obviously, but again, in general I had good experiences in classes, especially within my major where I could build a rapport with professors and really dig into my subject.
It never felt huge, even though with 45,000 students it's a pretty big school. I always felt like I had a place in the school and was more than a number. My best experiences though were at the college radio station and in my department.
The cons of the school may be pros for other people and have more to do with the area and the availability of entertainment not related to Potbelly's or frat row. As someone who wasn't into parties as such I found myself floundering for things to do in the city. Also, if you're not a football fan game days become mind-destroying as it suddenly takes 45 minutes to get from one end of town to the other.
Overall though, it was a good experience that I don't regret. Knowing what I know now I might choose a different school for me, but FSU is a solid mid-level state school with a bustling party scene and a decent bureaucratic system. |

There's not much I can offer in the defense of Florida State University - except that I've been to, seen, or been affiliated with many worse universities in the nation. It's simply a matter of lesser evils. I didn't have fun there, and I don't feel like my education was outstanding either. It boils down to location, and a school located in Tallahassee, FL, is necessarily squashed into a result similar to FSU. You can take similar colleges in Gainsville, Orlando, or Jacksonville and see the same thing. If you go here, I advise you do so because it is fairly easy to get an undergraduate education in three years. FSU also offers several programs that are academically outstanding for minor competition and financal input on the US university scale, and these are worth considering. They include the film school and underwater archaeology department. Know if you go here that most students aren't interested in academics primarily - FSU is well-known as a party school. Tallahassee, however, is a lifeless and sun-bleached American city lacking flavor and personality. Nothing removed from campus is vaguely fun. |

Florida State was an amazing place for me to experience college. I met interesting people and learned a lot in latter two years of my experience. The one and only critique I have of Florida State is that it's a place where one can easily get caught up in the party scene. I am a person who never had to study in high school, but college level science classes were difficult and required a lot of work. I didn't have much positive encouragement to do the work and found myself partying a lot. After a while, I changed my major to business and have always regretted not putting in the time and effort to learn about things that still interest me to this day. While my experience with Florida State's business school was positive and educational in every respect, business school was not what I had planned for originally, and I think the party scene contributed to my change of heart.
For a person who is resolute, has appropriate guidance and knows him/herself well, Florida State is a wonderful choice. The education is what you make of it. Benjamin Franklin said something to the effect of "all education is self-education," and I believe that to be true. Florida State was a spring board for me to Vanderbilt Law School, and educationally speaking, the education I received at Vanderbilt was worth exactly the same as the one I received from Florida State: It was valuable only to the extent that I was willing to work for it.
My advice to anyone considering Florida State is as follows: Follow your bliss and work hard towards that end. Florida State will provide you with everything you need for a good education except dedication and hard work, so do your best to avoid the pitfalls that snag many people but do enjoy football season!
