I loved Emporia State University - Growing up in Emporia, I didn't know if I would want to go to school in the same town but after enrolling I began to appreciate just how nice it is to go to a school that was smaller in size. I actually got to know my professors and not the GTA's!! This college is great, traditionally known as a teaching college, it has many other great programs to offer... I am especially attached to the History deptartment, their professor are not only a help but want to see you succeed in every aspect of your college life.
I would recommend Emporia State University (ESU) to students. ESU is a state accredited school that has small class sizes. The small class sizes allow you to get to know your professors and receive individual instruction when you need it. The small size of the school also allows you to get to know many of your classmates. Credits you receive from this college easily transfer to other state universities. The cost of tuitions is much less than many of the other state universities in Kansas.
ESU does have a few disadvantages. It is located in Emporia, Kansas, which isn't really close to any major cities. Also, the the classes offered aren't very flexible for non-traditional students. There are very few weekend or night courses offered.
When considering any school, I would recommend looking into the businesses that recruit from that school and consider your willingness to work for that company. Most schools have placement programs that offer lucrative careers within recruiting companies. When I graduated from ESU in 2000, Payless Shoe Source and Koch Industries commonly recruit business students from ESU.
I felt like the education I got at Emporia State University was very good and I enjoyed my experience there. The math department was excellent for a smaller state university and I felt well prepared to teach when I left. Most of my classes were engaging and enjoyable. ESU seemed small enough to get to know students and faculty but still large enough to offer many opportunities. I would definitely recommend this school to future students and given the opportunity, I would have chosen ESU again. For the money, it is a very good school. Cons - I can't think of any although I'm sure at the time, my list was a long one. The dorms left something to be desired but I think they've done a lot of work on them in the last 12 years. Also, the music department is great - and does a good job of including non-music majors.
Emporia State University is really a nice size. There's enough students to meet a variety of people- and have a variety of expriences- but not so many that it seems cold. Your professors will know your name at ESU- and that doesn't happen at larger colleges. I would recommend ESU strongly.
Pros: size, small-town atmosphere, approachable professors, school is well-integrated into the community.
Cons: Not the most exciting town in the world, dorms are pretty average.
