You will do best if you know what you want to study and why, and if you spend about 40 hours per week on classes and study, but that's probably true of any college.
I recommend Eckerd College highly. I enjoyed Eckerd College very much, and I wish I could be 20 years old and do it again.
Winter Term is Great!! I studied in Denmark, U.K. and Greece.
Classes were small, up to 30 people during Freshman and Sophomore years, and perhaps 5 to 15 in my major in Junior and Senior years. Independent study is available, and I took some courses by independent study, and these were just me and the professor. I think all my instructors were PhDs.
With the waterfront program, you can go sailing any afternoon you want, once you demonstrate basic sailing skills. The weather is sunny and warm almost all the time. I often went swimming except for 5 or 6 days in the winter when it was too cold. The nearest gulf beach is Pass-a-Grille, and it's one of the nicest beaches anywhere.

Tips - you don't need a car right away, everything is close to the campus by walking or a bus or friends. On campus parking is atrocious.
If you live in the dorm, be prepared for noise and activity - esp at night. Then be prepared to tiptoe in the mornings and not make any noise until a decent time - like noon. Either you join in and take no morning classes, sleep late and stay up late...or do the opposite. Both have advantages, if you are staying up late you meet many other students, there is a lot of activity and it is fun. If you take the morning classes and therefore have to go to bed before dawn, you will have no lines at breakfast, the library is not crowded, plenty of seats in class. the professor's undivided attention.
Eat at the cafeteria - save your money, do not blow it at the snack shops. I always put extra bread, fruit, etc. on my tray and slipped it into my backpack for between classes.
Used books - buy them, use them, resell them. I know it is tempting to hang onto books but really you will just lug them around for a few years (or a decade) until you realize you can let them go. Whatever you need will be at the library, online, or a friend is taking that class now and will let you use that book.
The teachers are wonderful, for the most part. They are all focused on the students, were fair and I enjoyed thier classes.
I would still go to this college if I had to pick over again. |
