i would recommend this college to others, but it definitely isn't for everyone. since you're in the city at columbia, you have to get used to being very independent (even if you think you already are, you're still not all the way there), be able to ask for help when you need it, and not mind being alone and doing your own thing sometimes. some people criticize columbia's lack of a community feel, but i love being able to just do what i want to do without everyone up in my business. this is all not to mention the world class academics. you will learn so much in these classes. the teachers can be a little stuck up and full of themselves, but for every snobby teacher there is at least one more sincere one that is always willing to help.
plain and simple, if you want a school where the social scene revolves around sports-- don't come here, or you will be dissapointed. |

Columbia is a great school. If you're looking for an urban campus, you can't get much better. The campus is small, only 6 blocks long, and 1 avenue wide. The architecture is outstanding, quite uniformly thematic, with some flashes of modernity.
The student body is really close, and there are many events throughout the four-year experience that bring students together. School sports are beyond horrible (except for fencing and x-country), but it's still fun to go and cheer the lions on.
One of my favorite things about Columbia is their Passport to the Arts program, which gives you free admission to museums all over the city, including the Met and MOMA.
Housing is decent, expect to certainly have a roommate for your first two years. Compared to the prices in the neighborhood, it is heavily subsidized.
Harlem is close by, although most Columbia students don't go there much. The 1 train stops right outside the gates, and gives really convenient access to the rest of the city. It is 20 minutes to Times Square, 30 minutes to Wall Street, etc.
There are only about 2000 students per class (1200 Columbia College, 300 Engineers, 500 Barnard) which makes for a nice atmosphere. |
