Colorado School of Mines produces some of the best engineers in the world. Be warned however, the is all they produce. If you are looking for a school with lots of different subjects, this isn't the place for you. Even most of the liberal arts classes have titles like "Energy and the environment" or "Pre-Columbian Technology in the greater south west." You won't come out as a balanced student but, as they say in the school fight song, you'll be a "helluva engineer."
Because the school is small and enrollment standards are high, there are a lot of smart people who go to Mines and find out there are smarter people then they are. The good news is that the environment is such that people will come together to work on projects or assignments. Because the student body isn't large, you can almost always contact your professors and ask questions or get clarification and they are hapy to help. Many students have keys to the buildings on campus so they can access them when the buildings are closed.
Overall, this is a hard school but it is worth the time and effort you have to put into it. Very often people find out I went to Mines and say "Wow. That's a tough school." They know it and respect it, at least in the engineering community.
