The College of Saint Benedict (CSB) is a great liberal arts college for women who are Catholic, white, and middle to upper-middle class. If you're looking for a small, tight-knit community this is the place to be. CSB provides a coeducational experience with Saint John's University (SJU). Though these two colleges are uniquely tied to one another, upon graduation, your diploma will only have the CSB emblem on it and not SJU's emblem. This is a nuisance since both men and women take classes at each university. The schools' website are combined (http://www.csbsju.edu).
Also, the alumni giving rate is much lower at CSB than it is at SJU. It is a popular known fact that Bennies (women that attended CSB) and Johnnies (men that attended SJU) marry at a higher than normal rate. Once these Bennies and Johnnie couples are married and established in the work force, most of their money goes toward SJU and not CSB.
As a minority alum from CSB, I would not recommend this college to other minority students. The campus diversity mainly consists of international students, with a couple of minority American students. If you're looking to find a diverse student body, look at the numbers, talk to current students, and/or alumni!
With that said, I have to mention that I made the best of my college experience. I still keep in touch with many of my mentors and professors from CSB/SJU. They have been very supportive, which is hard to find at a larger university. |

If you are considering this college, you should go. This college is beautiful, clean, and small enough to walk around easily. There may be a separation between the male and female campuses, but it is easy enough to get back and forth that it really isn't a problem. The college has amazing food, and the dorms are very clean, and bigger than most college dorms. The on-campus housing for upperclassmen is also ideal. The apartments are a nice segway into an apartment after graduation. The one con to this campus is that most people on weekends hang out on the St. John's campus, but that is not usually a problem because the buses run so frequently that it does not hinder the social scene. The buildings are also very central to campus, and there aren't very many, if any, outlying buildings that a student would need to walk to on a daily basis. |
