Clayton State University is a growing college, with a diverse number of programs to offer the surrounding community. The colleges and schools within the university include the College of Arts and Sciences, the College of Information and Mathematical Sciences, The College of Professional Studies, the School of Business, the School of Nursing, and the School of Graduate Studies.
One of the strongest schools within the college are the music program, which is a part of the College of Arts and Sciences. A reflection of the success and quality of the music program at CSU is Spivey Hall, a world-renown venue located on campus. It is one of the most acoustically perfect venues in the country, and attracts great talents from all over the world. CSU Students receive great discounts for most of the performances that take place on campus. For students interested in the CSU music program, I must note that it lacks a strong theatre department, although it is beginning to grow.
Another of the strongest programs at CSU is the archival history program. This is largely due to the fact that the Georgia State Archives as well as a National Archives sit adjacent to the campus. Students of the archival history program have access to internships at these archives, and all history students have access to the archives for research purposes.
The college also attracts an older demographic; people who are returning after many years to further their education and move up in their careers. Certificate, Associate, and Bachelor programs are all offered in the College of Professional Studies, degrees like Administrative Management, Computer Network Technology, Fashion Merchandising, Medical Coding, Paralegal Studies, and Office Technology. To serve this demographic, the college offers mainly evening and night classes and a great number of online or hybrid online courses. Also under the College of Professional Studies is the Department of Dental Hygiene and the Department of Health Care Management.
However, what Clayton State lacks the most is a campus life. There are several reasons for this, one of which is the fact that a considerable portion of the student body is of an older demographic. Also, currently, there aren't any dorms/on-campus housing, so the vast majority of students commute. There are plans to buy an adjacent apartment complex and turn this into dorm housing, but this has yet to come to fruition. However, there is housing nearby that is student-only. Adjacent to the campus is the apartment complex "Clayton Place." Despite the name, it is owned and operated independent of the university. To rent an apartment a tenant must be a student at any metro-Atlanta college, although not specifically Clayton State University. Rent there is between $400-$500 a month (utilities, cable, and internet included) and offers a good alternative to a student who wishes to live near campus. Most of the apartments are set up in the following fashion: 4 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms which share a common area and kitchen. There are select 2-br 2-ba units. More information on Clayton Place can be found at http://www.claytonplace.com.
I like Clayton State because the tuition is comparatively low, and I enjoy the program I am currently in. The teachers are great, and class sizes are small, and the online classes and evening/night classes allow me to work full time and attend college full time. Students are required to have a laptop in order to attend Clayton State, no matter what program you are in, and this allows for dynamic in-class instruction. I must note however that the on-campus tech support is mediocre. They'll upgrade your computer's software for free (well, it's a service paid for as part of the tuition costs), and this includes operating system, Microsoft Office, and any other program upgrades your classes may require you have installed. However, if you have a hardware problem with your laptop, I strongly advise you not to take it to the on campus tech support. I've found that they, more often than not, just make things worse.
Another complaint I have is how they're proposing to spend some of the money on expansion of the campus, although I'm sure this is a complaint that is not unique to CSU. Instead of building new classrooms, or repairing the internet hookups in all classrooms, or improving the campus WiFi, there are final stage plans to build a Student Life center--despite the total lack of student life on campus. I suppose this is in preparation for the dorms they also want to build/acquire, but most students view a new Student Life center as a waste of money at this time.
