Students going to this college should be prepared to be challenged academically and work hard. It is a good school and will give you a good education. I would recommend this college, at least to a certain type of student. I would still choose it again if I was living my life over. The Pros are a nice campus, good relationship to the city and other schools, and a great education. Cons are lack of social diversity in the student body and lack of high quality student life that other universities have. People should know that CMU is a unique school and you have to at least visit it to get a feel for its personality as a university.
A major pro of this college is it is very prestigious. On any job application I have filled out, the employer is always impressed to see Carnegie Mellon. It is a very competitive school, the majority of students are highly intelligent, and also the majority of students are of asian descent, and male. To go along with the great education, there is also a very good social atmosphere at carnegie mellon. Greek life is very prominent, along with other social events and clubs. Spring Carnival is the most looked forward to event of the year. I would highly recomment Carnegie Mellon to anyone who is ready to work very hard to obtain a very bright future.
Innovative and challenging curriculum, friendly environment especially for families. The best in IT and Public Administration. It's worth to spend two years in CMU. The cost of living is inexpensive. Very reach in international social environment and social networking. Not good for international subjects to educate such as international money and financing. Joint program with MBA.
I majored in Fine Arts at CMU. Overall, it was a good experience in that I learned a lot about making art and spent a lot of time making art. Most of my art instructors were pretty good; one was fabulous (but does not teach there now), and one was awful (and is still there). I had to take a handful of courses outside my major. They were just okay. I took humanities and English lit courses, which were not as good at the English courses I took at my high school. Granted, my high school English classes were top notch.
Be prepared to work hard. You may or may not have a good social life while there. Many of the computer science majors I met complained about their lack of a social life, but the arts and humanities majors didn't seem to have any problems in this regard.
Workload is overwhelming especially in computer science and engineering. Dating prospects are not very good. Campus food is okay, local food choices are fairly good. Dorms are for the most part well-maintained but small. Lots of intramural sports that are easy to get involved in, but clubs are a bit of a differnet story. Lots of political activism, ethnically and religiously oriented groups on campus, so white males will have a hard time finding something to join.
Carnegie Mellon University is possibly the number one college to study Computer Science. Located in the beautiful city of Pittsburgh, CMU holds many incentives for students. While there is limited on-campus housing, there are many affordable apartment complexes within walking distance. The overall math department is huge. I would recommend anyone with a high interest in Computer Science to go to Carnegie Mellon, one of best experiences of my life!
