As an engineering student, I soon realized that college degree in my field would require a college to be Acredited. Cal Poly Pomona (CPP) is one such school. I also attended Berkeley for two quarters, but decided to transfer to CPP for a more 'hands-on' approach. Berkeley was very thorough for math and scientific principles, but at CPP I was able to visit the principles put into action. Either thru field trips or in their constant laboratory, the student was shown what the principle is instead of just on paper.
The school is not exactly in the middle of a fun town. If you are looking for that, or perhaps to join a Greek society, I recommend the other Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo. This isn't to say there isn't anything to do at Pomona, or that the student body is a bunch of deadbeats. Pomona is closer to Vegas and LA and the snowy mountains of Mammoth! Cal Poly Slow students will suddenly discover how locked in they are during their second year.
Just note that the major difference between the two Cal Poly schools would be the student body. I have met people from across the globe to someone from own hometown! It is an enormous school, with the largest body of engineering students in California (last I checked). For some odd reason, it is diffucult to join initially, but transfering into the school is easier.
Some cons about CPP is that it is also a farming school; when the wind is right during the winter, you will smell those cows and pigs. Yikes! But it is to be expected in a town like Pomona. As a recommendation, if you have to live on-campus, go for the red-brick building. I recommend living off-campus though. There are plenty of town-houses that will rent you a room in the nearby (10 min drive) town of Walnut Creek for much less the cost of on-campus living.
Lastly, both Cal Poly universities are VERY well known. Alumni are almost everywhere in the marketplace (many didn't even pursue an engineering degree but have successful careers), so the reputation alone is worthwhile. And because it is a Cal Poly program, it is not expense compartively. Now, don't believe this is a Cake Walk. The reputation is there for a reason. The first two years at CPP are designed for a student to fail. Expect to work hard and ask support from fellow students and teachers. Once you past that though, enjoy the ride. |

First and foremost: if you're not used to the quarter system, brace yourself. It's great, it's awesome, but it goes really, really quickly.
Cal Poly Pomona has an OUTSTANDING reputation for engineering. At the time I graduated in 1987, CP students typically had $5K to $10K higher starting salaries than the "ivory tower" universities of the UC system. This was due to the extensive lab work that accompanied every engineering class. (Note: the charters for CSU and UC schools are different, thus the discrepancy.)
I attended as a commuter student from Fullerton and Yorba Linda, so I can't vouch for the dorms or the party life.
The campus is lovely, including the rose gardens, and it looks like they've continued building after I left. The new engineering building is quite striking.
You can be proud of the theatre dept's productions and facilities.
Parking can be challenging, especially the first two weeks, but motorcyclists don't have as much of a problem.
I've been told of experiences where the campus police were overzealous or officious, but I've had no direct contact.
There are parts of Pomona that have a bad reputation, but the area adjacent to the school is fine, far safer than USC, for example. Since it's near the junction of 4 freeways, you can get to lots of fun places (mountains, the big Dis, beaches, etc) easily.
I returned to CP for my graduate work because of the engineering faculty, Dr. Lak in particular. They challenge you while they educate you and when you complete a course you feel like you've really accomplished something.
You can be proud of your Cal Poly degree. I know I am. |

Interesting Fact |
|
|
|
Chancellors at the College of William and Mary have included some very famous retired statesmen, including Margaret Thatcher (UK Prime Minister), Henry Kissinger (US Secretary of State), Warren E. Burger (US Chief Justice), and, currently, Sandra Day O'Connor (US Associate Justice). |
