Don't be too put off by it's "jewishness" if you are from any other background; Brandeis is very diverse, offers a lot of international people and cultures, so you're bound to find good friends. Brandeis is a serious school, so don't plan on just partying, but of course, parties are there. Access to Boston is via a shuttle or a commutter rail -- make friends with someone with a car! :) Finally, know that their computer science program, while small, has *VERY* up and coming staff, and well connected with top colleges around. |

As a private university founded in 1948, Brandeis University supports a liberal arts focus for the undergraduate student looking to pursue anything from art history to economics bachelor degrees. It creates wonderful undergraduate experience for the student who is serious about focusing on their academics away from the party environment of the bigger schools. The majority of the class sizes are small which makes it easier to get personalized attention and help when needed. The professors are always willing to provide additional guidance after hours and there is a great resource of peer and graduate student tutoring also available for those needing extra help.
My experience at Brandeis was truly special because I was able to not have the distractions that most party schools have in place but also be close enough to Boston to enjoy the cultural activities and social parties it has to offer. I enjoyed the small school coziness of going for a cup of Ben & Jerry's at the on campus coffeehouse, feeling like my professors are more like educated friends more than an unapproachable entity, and the closeness that only a smaller school can provide. They even had a shuttle service that takes you into the city for shopping, going out and running errands that worked for free. For those that preferred the commuter rail and local "T" stops, those were literally minutes from campus, making getting around virtually easy without a car.
All in all, my rating of the school is positive with very few cons. One of the only cons might be to have the dining halls open later for people who don't eat early, have more on campus ATMs, and elevators for some of the residence halls that have 5 or 6 flights of stairs to climb. |
