Austin College is a very special place. While Sherman, TX is not the Garden Spot of Texas, it's close to Dallas, but not too close. The Professors really care about the students and there are virtually no TA's. The class sizes are very small. Since all the students must live on campus, there is a real family atmosphere. Add to that the Jan Term, where you will get to take very special classes and most likely get to travel at least once. During Jan Term, since so many students travel, it's also a time to get to know your fellow students even better. Since Sherman does not entertain, one does learn to find things that are interesting. The Lake Campus, when the weather is warm, is a great place to hang out. All in all, you can't find a better place to learn and more importantly Grow! My experience at AC changed my life and I am guessing it will change yours! |

My experience at Austin College was excellent. Several things drew me to attend there. First and foremost, the calibur of the education is stellar. No finer liberal arts education can be had in Texas (in my biased opinion). The classes are small, hands on, and full of excellent discussion opportunities. Secondly, if you want a school that cares about community and public service, AC can help you fulfill that need. There are plenty of service opportunities. Lastly, if you desire a smaller school, but one with an active social scene, AC might be a good choice for you.
The dorms and campus apartments are more than adequate. The campus is gorgeous, the fitness center is full of every exercise maching imaginable, and the eating choices well provide for the likes, dislikes and dietary needs of the 1300 students that attend. The faculty is helpful, available and just as likely to join you in the campus pub after class as they are to give you an indepth explanation of your last test grade.
There are a few cons. First, the campus is situated in Sherman, TX, which is not exactly the metropolitan center of Texas. It is saved, however, by Mckinney and Plano which are rapidly expanding northwards, meaning that you're only 45 mins from fun in the city.
Secondly, if you're looking for a school that has national sororities and fraternities, you won't find them at AC. While there is plenty of active Greek life on campus, all are local sororities and fraternitie
Overall, my experience with AC was favorable and I'd do four years there again in a heartbeat. In fact, my only complaint is that they didn't have any sort of graduate program that I could attend. |
