Allegheny can be a great or horrible place, depending on the student. If you're looking for a solid creative humanities background, you're not going to want to attend Allegheny. They are concentrating more and more on the sciences in recent years, so other departments suffer.
They also promote small class size, which is wonderful, until all of your professors, advisers, and mentors leave. This is especially excruciating when your Senior Comprehensive project is in the works, and you have to start all over with new advisers and comp readers. I had 7 people leave my junior and senior years that had direct contact with my comp progress. I was a double major, but still, that turnover rate is ridiculous. Part of it is the town where the college is located. Meadville is the most boring place on the planet. If you're an awesome professor who probably has a ton of contacts at other schools, you'd want to get out as soon as you could too. Not many profs make a true home for themselves there.
That said, I do feel that I got a balanced education. The liberal arts training does improve problem-solving skills and look good on resumes. Plus you always win Trivial Pursuit and home viewings of Jeopardy with all the reading you'll do. I also met the best people there. It's been almost 10 years since I matriculated, and I'm still in constant contact with the friends I met there. I don't believe that would happen at a huge state school where you're just a number.
Final thoughts--don't expect the name to travel very far. If you're going to stay around Western Pennsylvania, go for it, but after being employed in Los Angeles, it's clear that no one has heard about it or even cares that far away. Most employers just care that you have a degree now, so keep that in mind before blowing 140 grand plus another few thousand on textbooks. I had two scholarships and a grant, and I still have over $25,000 in student loan debt. |
