Vermont Law School (VLS) is located in a beautiful little town in rural Vermont. The professors are top notch and the school has a great and well respected environmental law program. The buildings have recently been renovated and upgraded and are modern, beautiful and ecologically sound. The students are a mix of earthy/crunchy types along with NY and NJ transplants. The school is very forward thinking and is doing some fine and interesting work with native americans and other groups.
Pros: scenic and beautiful area, lots of local skiing, great professors and caring staff, small school - lots of personal attention.
Cons: located in a town with more cows than people. Nearest movie theater and large grocery is in New Hampshire, culture shock if you are from a big city, long cold winters.
Being from urban NY, going to VLS was a bit of a culture shock for me. Winter was tough - especially the first year. Many first year students suffered from depression during the winter. There was a great lack of social outlets. That being said, it was also a great experience to live in a completely different setting, with smart and interesting people. It's a gorgeous setting and the school is gaining rapidly in presige.
The U.S. federal government spends less on education than the U.K. (which has a fifth the population of the U.S.)
