I do public relations and media relations work for a large museum. The amount of variety within my job is incredible--I get to pitch stories, do all kinds of writing, work with television and print reporters, and talk to people all over the institution about what they do. On the other hand, the job is very high stress and I am often called upon to work overtime on short notice. If you're interested in this field, consider a few things. First, the skills that you will hone in these kinds of positions are applicable to all kinds of other jobs in the future. You're not locked into one side of things, either--plenty of people have been both reporters and public relations specialists, myself included. However, if you're not confident, or good with people, it's probably not for you. This is not a 9 to 5, clockwatcher desk job. You are out there on the line, it's your name and your face, and if you screw up in a crisis it can be a big deal. But if you love excitement, go for it! |
