i work as a 911 dispatcher, and in my opinion it is a very exciting career. i dipatch polce and fire, answer 911 phone calls, and answer radio traffic for the entire county. i recommend this career to anyone who has patience and would love the feeling of helping other people. while you are appreciated most of the time you do get the occasional call where you cannot seem to do anything to help the caller (from the callers prespective). the highs are highs and the lows are lows. meaning, not every evening is as eventful as the previous.
In order to enjoy this career you must be flexible, and quick thinking. You must enjoy dealing with different situations constantly, and thinking on your feet. You must also be willing to do shift work, long shifts etc.
Being a 9-1-1 emergency services dispatcher is very rewarding. It is a fast paced job which demands attention to detail and the ability to multi-task. Being able to help someone in need is a tremendous feeling. The main drawbacks to this job are: 1) dealing with losing a life, 2) work hours (emergency services is open 24/7 365 days a year), and 3) low pay for the stress. I loved this job and only left for better hours and higher pay to better support my family. I still do dispatching on a reserve status meaning I get in a minimum of 8 hours per month. I would definitely suggest this job to others, though some people are just not cut out for it.
I was a Juvenile Probation Officer for Pima County, AZ. A Bachelor's degree is required although various majors are accepted. I definitely recommend this career and enjoyed working in the Juvenile Court system. I especially enjoyed working with the youth and learning about the legal system from the inside. The pros include a large variety of job duties that can be enhanced or changed by switching units and great benefits and decent pay. The cons can be the hours and the stress levels that can be high particularly when court reports are due to the judges. People should know that there is a lot of reward associated to working with young people who have made unwise choices but who are, in most cases, going to work toward change. People should also know that, as a Probation Officer, they can assist with those changes rather than just police behavior.
Anyone considering a position with an alarm monitoring console should possess a combination of interpersonal and technical abilities. The job requires a unique blend of technical/computer use skills to manipulate the alarm monitoring software as well as strong social skills necessary to interact with staff at alarmed locations.
In addition, a great deal of adaptability and flexibility are required for two major reasons. First, every situation the operator encounters is nearly unique and each requires a slightly different approach than previous reactions. Secondly, technology is developing at an increasingly rapid pace and requires personnel with sufficient technical adaptability to keep abreast of these changes and effectively utilize them as tools.
I would recommend this position to anyone with an interest in the security industry and who is comfortable with computers and computer applications. The fast pace of the job is vastly superior to most uniformed security officers in that there are not long periods of down-time and boredom. The working environment is also more casual due to the fact that operators are not under constant public scrutiny.
As a bodyguard you gotta be tough. And also willing to put your career in front of a lot of things in your life. And you need to know how to be articulate and use a handgun.
