A career as a pipe fitter or steamfitter can go down a variety of paths; some are welders, some are HVAC and Refrigeration technicians, some are DDC technicians, some are fitters. All are involved with any heating and cooling piping applications.
One generally starts out through a five year apprenticeship to learn the trade. Applicants to union apprenticeships need to have math skills (geometry), have good visualization skills and understand basic physics in order to successfully be accepted into and complete the program.
The work is not easy and fitters are subjected to a variety of working conditions. Fitters may be working on new construction or renovations, maintenance and repair work in existing buildings. The job sites may be commercial, industrial, educational or residential buildings.
It can be a rewarding career, especially when you can drive around, point out buildings to friends and family, and declare, "I helped build that!"
