I am a Customer Service Representative at an inbound call center for a large financial institution. My background includes experience in both the service and health care industries. I chose my current job principally because of the lesser physical stress, and the financial compensation is well worth the switch. Working at an inbound call center is a very good choice for individuals who have a thicker skin, and are able to calm and present alternatives to customers that may not understand or agree with the services they are receiving. The biggest pro for this carreer is that unlike face to face customer service, with telephone contact it is much easier to avoid emotional stress that comes with negative situations. Also, every day is "casual Friday", and the less conventional working hours fit my lifestyle. Inbound call center work is a very good choice for students, the physically handicapped, or anyone who wants a well paying job without taking their work home with them, literally or emotionally. I would definitely choose this profession again.
My advise for this type of career is to pursue it only if you are 100% sure about it. A great deal of the the time people pursing a career in financial services are blinded by dollar signs. While a lot of money can be made, you have to be very dedicated and work very long hours, especially your first couple of years. Also, try to partner with a mentor. If you don't have any experience and are young you are going to have an extremely hard time making this a career, unless of course you have conections to people with a great deal of money and they trust you working with their money.
