I absolutely love what I do. The money's crummy, and it's thankless at times, but just knowing you're helping people is its own reward (Cheesy as it sounds). If you like people, and can stand to see the same people day in and day out, and don't mind not having much cash on hand at any given time, looking after a family (Or a commune) is an incredible experience. It's like playing 'mom,' and I think I was put on earth to do just this.
Uh, let's see, what you might not know... Well, no one seems to know much about this line of work. It can be difficult, thankless, and oftentimes the people you're taking care of won't even realize you're working so hard. So it's tough. Really tough. Stressful, too. But still wonderful if you can do it. |

When you are a personal assistant to wealthy people, you are not doing anything they can't do themselves. I am excluding jobs where you are helping someone who is never around, or where you are helping someone who is paralyzed or in a similar situation and NEEDS you. I'm talking about the stay-at-home entrepeneurs who 'need' you to organize their life and help them. No, you are not needed for what you are hired for. They hire you for one of two reasons. The first could be that they need a friend. They will follow you around as you work and they will demand attention for childlike things. This isn't that unbearable. Unfortunately, it is the second reason which makes this job so horrid. The second reason these people hire you is to have someone around to make them feel superior. They will go on power trips, yelling at you and harassing you. They will make you feel low and useless. They will even purposely give you zero instruction on how to do something, and then chastize you when you do it wrong. My hint to people who choose this profession: remember always that your job is to make someone powerless feel better about themselves. Remind yourself constantly of how pathetic this is, that this person could have all that money and be so successful, and have to dump on some struggling student or mother to feel better about themselves. You will end up pitying them, and that makes the job a lot more tolerable. |
