I work filling orders from retail jewellery stores. I enjoy it. It is very repetitive. We work in a converted bank vault, so it is crowded and noise must be kept at a minimum. Accuracy is the most important thing, followed by speed. Holiday seasons (Christmas, Valentine's Day, Mother's Day) are the busiest time. The rest of the year is quite relaxed, at least in comparison. For entry level work, no education above high school is required, and in my company at least there are lots of positions that one can advance into. I would recommend a job like this to someone who can be content in a working situation without expecting/needing constant stimulation.
In the 18th and 19th century, hatmakers used poisionous chemicals including mercury in their work. As result, many developed pathological symptons -- an estimated 10% went insane. Hence the term "mad as a hatter" and Lewis Carroll's character, the Mad Hatter.
