For over a decade I've worked as a print journalist. I've published hundreds of articles, I have connections in the field and I've won awards. But now the entire business is collapsing, and I can't get work. My old bosses are out of work. Papers that have published for decades are closing down, staffs are getting cut. Print journalism is dying fast, and it would be a huge mistake to pursue it as a career now.
My career is Advertising Research. It is a stable job because companies are always looking for insights into the consumer market which drives most businesses. I highly recommend this career if you are looking into going into advertising or marketing.
I worked hard to get where I am and tried a number of other industries first. I found that my natural tendencies towards organisation, creativity and innate ability to build rapport with people and get the best out of them has enabled me to be very successful in this profession. To anyone wanting to become an Account Director in a design/creative environment, I would suggest that you choose your place of employment carefully to make sure that the things that you get the most out of will be catered for. If you want to be involved in the creative, or lots of client side interaction, then ensure that that's what an employer has to offer. Its also great to get in at an entry level and make a name for yourself through hard work, contacts, and sometimes, luck.
