I am a reference assistant in a small, South Carolina public library system. It's an interesting job because you deal with people from all walks of life and most of them have a question that they want answered. I work readers' reference, so I have to know a lot about fiction, movies, tv and music. In short, I have to know high and low culture and everything in between. I love what I do and I'm planning on going to library school, so yes, I'd do it all over again. This is the kind of job where the quest for pure knowledge is seen as a good thing, so people who are curious about the world around them would do well. On the downside, you will find yourself dealing with some very strange, even perverted, people. Unless you take up something more behind the scenes like cataloging or collection development. One thing you should probably be aware of that you may not have realized about library workers is that we're more hip than the stereotype lets on.
Libraries are a wonderful place to work for those who enjoy public service and liturature. I choose this career later in life and would do it again. However, I had to volunteer and take many classes in order to qualify for a job, and the field is low-paying. A little known fact? My job is different everyday and takes a lot of creativity.
