I love being a librarian. I wish I had found this career sooner. There are so many different sub-categories within library science that I never really thought about until I was studying it.
Did you know that most librarians have a Master's degree? And many librarians have two Master's degrees - one in the subject they specialize in like Business or Education and the other in Library Science.
Librarians work in schools, universities, public libraries, medical libraries, law libraries, museums, archives, historical societies, law firms, movie production companies, music companies, and more. Think of every city you have ever visited - chances are they had at least one library, probably several.
A great place to learn about librarianship is the American Library Association website: ala.org |

I enjoy my career immensely. It gives me the opportunity to interact with the two things I like best, interacting with people and books. My advice to people considering this career is to have a positive attitude toward people. If I had to do it again, I would definitely choose this career as well as my career as a teacher. There are a few cons such as spending a lot of "outside work time" doing extra little things to keep the library running smoothly, and sometimes, doing things not directly associated with being a librarian, but the pros of sharing knowledges, working with individuals who want to learn, being surrounded by knowledge, far outweigh any cons. I think, what most people do not know about being a librarian, especially in a school, is that you have an opportunity to work with people one at a time or in small groups and to help them increase their knowledge and skills. |
