Becoming a legal assistant/legal secretary in Florida does not require any special schooling. I have worked as a legal assistant for six years primarily in the field of workers’ compensation. Law firms in Florida are a dime a dozen, and the rate of pay is generally better than other administrative fields. In my particular field, I maintain the attorney’s schedule, use a dictation machine, do simple form letters to clients, Judges, mediators, attorney’s etc. The up side to this field is that you can really start out in a law office in the most entry level position and work your way up without receiving professional training, and another pro is that generally when Christmas comes you are usually awarded with a Christmas bonus. The cons are that you may end up working for an attorney who has a type A personality, is a real jerk and doesn’t care about his/her employees. Overall it provides a good income and stable employment. |

When we daydream about perfect jobs, a lot of us have a wish list that goes like this. I want to work from home so there's no commute, no boss and no dress code. I'd like to be able to work as much or as little as I want to on any given day. It would be lovely if I had no annoying coworkers to deal with. Oh, and I'd like to be able to use my home computer to make money.
I have that job. I'm a freelance transcriber/typist. What I do is produce transcripts from the recordings made by court reporters. Court reporters sit in courtrooms all day, taking down on tape or digital audio files every word said in their presence. Somebody has to listen to these recordings and type it into a fairly strict format for the official record. That's what I do.
Right now I have three clients in three different counties, only one of whom I've ever met. My clients mail me CDs or tapes of trials, hearings, depositions, or whatever they've been asked to take down. I listen to these recordings and transcribe everything I hear. I then email the transcription along with a bill to the court reporter who pays me for my work.
I typically work five days a week, but sometimes will do six or seven if something needs to be done in a rush. Rush work is paid double by the way. However, if I want to take an hour off and go for a good jog in the middle of the day, I do so. If I want to work late into the night, I do that. If I want to work wearing my bathrobe, that's what I do. To give you an idea of what I consider idyllic working conditions, I rarely wear socks. What's your office dress code?
The working conditions of this particular career couldn't be better. Essentially, I'm an independent contractor who owns his own business. If there's a downside, it's primarily the money. While I make a living doing this, I'll never get rich. If money is your primary motivator, choose something else to do. Money is not a big moving force in my life; I value my independence much more and so I'm willing to make less in order to have that freedom.
There's also the constant possibility that the work will dry up, that my clients won't supply me with enough to do. If that happens, then I'll be out beating the pavement to drum up more clients, and that's a hard thing to do. Most court reporters use the same typist for years and years, so breaking into the business can be tough. However, if you can find a reporter to type for, and your work is of high quality, you can be assured that they'll keep sending it your way.
I've had several other jobs over the years, including a 14-year career as a technical specialist in industry, as well as a short time spent as a high school English teacher. At present, I'll accept the somewhat low wages I earn in exchange for the freedom to work when I want and be my own boss. |
