Yes I would recommend this career to people. The pros of this career is the outcome over the years. But the cons are you struggling at the beginning because people don't really know how your business is.

I am a first time college student currently enrolling at Santa Fe in Gainesville for my A.S. in Graphic Design while working on my A.A. in Computer Science. I wish to transfer to the University of Florida to complete my Bachelors degree while working in a graphic design career field. I'm really excited to work towards getting both degrees, Graphic Design being my passion and Computer Science being secondary but still providing me that sense of stability. I hope that I am able to employ both skill sets in the future because I feel that these two fields are closer related than most people initially think. And I am more than ready to exploit that.
I am actually now an instructor in this career but started out as a Graphic Designer. I've loved every minute of it and for me there couldn't have been a better choice. For those interested in a fantastic place to learn all about graphic or interactive design consider Valencia College, Orlando, FL.
From all the reviews written here, it sounds like a great career choice for someone who has a passion for computers, clients and hard work. Customer service seems to stand out in my mind, a lot. However, it is sad knowing that to get a job is very difficult since technology is growing. I don't think I can compete with all the talented individuals out there. I am now considering this to widen my knowledge after being in the medical and clerical field all my life. I have learned about a few great websites that are really interesting, and hope to widen my knowledge, daily. Kudos to all the the talented persons who are creative, good at computers and enjoy this career.
I am currently studying and want to become a Graphic Designer, i am really pleased with everyones comments- and its interesting to see everyones personal opinions of what they think and feel about this career. I am definitely up for all the hard work, and i know it will be worth it in the end. I like the fact that the learning doesn't stop and there is so many directions this career field can take you depending on your interests. I know from your comments that early networking is a must to get noticed and can lead you to a successful job. Thank you everyone and good luck i am sure i will repost when I have moved forward in my career.
I love Graphic Design and its ever expanding learning capability’s. Am very excited to begin learning the technical and artistic aspects of this trade, when it comes to this type of work an open mind is key. The wiliness to learn and apply things you learn should be at the top of your list. Whether you’re a self-taught graphic artist or college educated graphic artist you should keep in mind that there is an endless amount of free resources to build basic art foundations, practice technical and artist techniques and finally apply what you have learned in the real world.
If you have no idea where to start or even if this career is for you I suggest going outside the boundaries of this site. If you think you’re going to get hands on experience of what is to be a designer from this site, then you have no idea what is in store for you. I would start off by researching the software’s and programs that graphic artist use to achieve works of art. Adobe.com is a great place to start from there I suggest downloading free trials of these programs and start looking for tutorials and training videos on the web. YouTube is a great place for free Photoshop tutorials from basic to advanced.
Another excellent website is photoshoplady.com this site has tons of free tutorials ranging from basic to extremely advanced. Be aware that learning these programs do take time, learning at your own pace is the best for solution for those who have a tight schedule. Once you feel confident enough in your artistic ability you should put you art on display. Deviantart.com is a great art community that allows you to create a profile and upload graphics and artistic images of all types. Accepting criticism is crucial in the art world so post your best piece and watch the feedback roll in. well I hope this was helpful to those who are considering a career in the graphic arts.
I love my carreer. I work for a Television station in boston and went to an art school in Brookline, Ma. I get to design and develop and work on many projects using industry standard tools.
I am a digital media producer and design and develop interactive media for a huge corporation. I would not do anything over again, this.
To do this you need to go beyond what school teaches you. You need to devote your own time to want to learn more, and learn it.
In future I want to become a game developer, now i am a graphic designer, At the age of 12 i am become a mad for tv video games
and at 18 i decided to create a own game. At now i achieved 25% of my Career by studied of 3d softwares. Now i am 23 So trying hard as much as possible to achieve my goal.
This is a hard career to get into so it's best if you know someone in the field so you can get your foot in the door! You also will feel like you spend your life on the computer, but it is worth it all in the end!
I have worked as a professional graphic designer for 3 years now. It has been incredibly fulfilling and I feel lucky to be able to use my creativity every day. My advice to those interested in this career is to pay attention during the courses that teach you how to use the programs. This is vital. I would recommend this career to anyone interested. If I had it to do all over again, I would - but I would research more into the world of video arts. The major pro to this career is being able to be creative every day, and seeing the results of your hard work. The negative side is that there are often long hours, and you are criticized regularly by people outside of the field. You don't always get to design things your way - you have to please the client. One thing people should know is that the industry has a wide variety of jobs for designers. An in-house designer will have a very different job from someone who works for a large design firm.
I would recommend a career in Graphic Design. Companies need to market their products and services. The Graphic Designer will produce logos, brochures and other branding/marketing materials. The pros to becoming a Graphic Designer are the flexibility to work as a Freelance Designer or as a full time employee and the demand for Graphic Designers is high. Graphic Designers are in demand at design studios, newspapers etc. The cons to becoming a Graphic Designer are that with the digital age, internet driven marketing is over taking traditional Graphic Design. More and more companies are looking for a "two for one" deal in which they want Graphic Designers not only to create print materials, but also design websites. A lot of these companies have no clue that Web Design and Graphic Design are two different degrees. When considering a career in Graphic Design keep in mind that certain cities and states are hot spots for Graphic Designers. You may have to relocate to find the job you dream about.
This is a good career choice for anyone who considers themselves creative. There are opportunities available for full time employment as well as freelance. Flexibility is key. You must have the ability to manage your time wisely and work under strict deadlines.
I would not recommend choosing this career path, it is very difficult to get into and there aren't alot of jobs out there at the moment. If I had this to do all over again, I would go to the dentist school or something.
I generally enjoy being a graphic designer. There is a sense of accomplishment in creating things, that I know wouldn't exist in most other fields. Downsides to this career are the often long hours, and starting out, generally low pay. There is a diversity of work though that can't be beat, and every day presents a new challenge.
People think this is going to be an easy job, just coloring all day, but you really have to be able to take constructive critism. I would recommend this career because it pays pretty well, everyday is different, and it is a fun job. The pros are the relax work enviroment but the cons are constantly changing software and technology can become overwhelming to keep up with. To get a good paying job in this field you really need to go to a four year college and not a two year or certificate program. You have to have a lot of projects/experience to back you up when going to a job to proove you are a good designer.
I love being a graphic artist. The biggest con is how saturated the field has become in certain areas of the country. Depending on where you live, it may be difficult to get a job. And some jobs can be very repetitive without a lot of creativity involved, such as a production artist. On the other hand, it is very exciting to create things for yourself and other people, everything from a company logo to a web site to a newspaper to an illustration. To succeed in this career, the most important thing is to stay on top of the latest technology and design ideas. It is also vitally important to have a broad knowledge base. It is difficult to find a job in only print, for instance. It's a great career, though, and you get to be creative and make money doing so.
My main suggestion would be to learn all the software that you can. The more programs and coding that you know, the more valuable you will be to an employer. One of the downsides to the career is that new technologies are constantly cropping up, so it's very easy for your education to become "outdated" with the newest upgrades, so a true passion for the field is necessary. You must have the initiative to stay on top of what's going on in your field. The good things about being in the design field is having so much creative freedom. If you're into art, you'll enjoy picking out the colors and graphics. Finishing a product and knowing that your client is satisified with it is a great feeling.
Be ready to do a ton of work if you want to get good! If you go to a good school for graphic design it makes a HUGE difference, no matter how good you think you are now! I would definately recommend this career if you have a good eye for it. I'd definately choose this career over and over, maybe I'd try photography as a career but I do that on the side anyway. One major pro of the job is that since graphic design is literally everywhere, it's not too hard to get a good job in the field. The negative side is that dealing with clients can be a pain. Sometimes you make an awesome design but the client wants to move one little thing, and they don't understand why it kills the design.
