a career in arts is something that only some people can do, is a fun and easygoing career. not that much to study, but a lot of drawing to do. best choice of my life
I have worked with print graphics for over 10 years - from paper printing to textile printing. It has allowed me to be creative with the design work, as well as 'industrious' with the production of the finished products. Being self employed also allows me the ability to set my own schedule, but, means that I am solely responsible for all aspects. I will say, I wouldn't change a thing, though!
It is a great career, but you need to have a creative mind. Yes i would recommend this career. Yes definately. pros- creativity helps. cons- hard work does not matter. As i said hard work does not pay-off.
Designing is not an artwork. It requires multidisciplinary knowledge just about everything. Most importantly you will have to learn about people (users) since you are designing products that they will want to use for their everyday lives.
My job title is "Production Layout Artist". I work for a multi-national publisher typesetting and working on layouts for English Language Teaching course books. I also prepare, color correct and retouch photos for these books. I work with InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator on a daily basis. I actually find my work to be quite enjoyable and challenging. Organization, attention to detail and problem solving are all necessary skills; as well as having an eye for design and color.
The reason I rate my opinion of my job at "4" is that publishing is increasingly trying to cut costs and increase productivity by outsourcing work. At first this work was going to local packagers but now it is also going overseas. This means that its harder for me to earn a decent wage, hold a full-time position and advance in my profession. I will probably have to adapt and project manage work that is outsourced (much less creativity involved) or switch fields all together to help insure that I'm not unemployed down the road. My kind of work in publishing is dying FAST!
