With Creative Writing, I can express myself an put my feelings, thoughts and ideas on paper. The unfortunate thing is it can be hard to make a living out of it. Anyone considering this field would do best to find another job to support them while they work on their craft. |

I am a freelance professional writer, editor, and translator. I love it. It takes some time to build up your client base and also to make yoursel known, but once you do everything starts working smoothly. The best tips I have are: When a prospective client ask you for a sample of your work but they will provide you the topic, don't ever accept to make it longer than 150 words. Also work on your portfolio, write about as many different topics as you can. Make a habit of keeping up with the news and what is going on in the world. Keep your research skills sharp and always have at hand the best dictionary you can afford. |

I stumbled into this work quite by chance, to kill time while between jobs. I used to sit and watch people, and try to build a picture in my mind about how each persons life could be. I found this so stimulating, that I started writing small sketches based on imagined situations where these fictional characters (whom I had merely observed) interacted, fought, loved and LIVED! To my surprise, my family and friends enjoyed these little pieces very much & the stories started getting published.
If you are looking at creative writing as a means of living, I would certainly not advise it. The lead time between starting to write, and getting paid for it is quite long. Anyone wanting to write fiction must be prepared to hold down another job or alternate source of income for a few years, till they are reasonably established.
The joys of creating a universe of your own, and populating it with characters, both real and imagined, gives a intellectual 'high' that is hard to replicate. The creative process is an extremely satisfying experience. Also it gives you the freedom to experiment, work at your own pace & in your own time. Being a writer is also a sort of 'social license' to be as whacky as you wish to be, creative people are a bit crazy anyway! |

I'm a professional novelist, and I like it very much. I would recommend it only to those who are self-motivated, disciplined, and willing to work with little reward (especially when first starting out). I would definitely choose to be a writer, but it was a long hard journey, and even after being published for several years now, I still don't earn enough to consider myself a complete success. The pros of being a writer are getting to do something you love, getting to set your own hours. The cons are having to deal with a lot of rejection before finally getting your break, and not earning that much even after you've been published.
Anyone who wants to write should really want it. It's not enough to just think it would be something fun to do. You have to want to tell stories and want to have people read those stories. You can't be shy or modest as an artist, and you can't be afraid of rejection.
The first step to becoming a novelist is to write something. Don't start thinking about anything else until you've actually completed a manuscript. After you complete it, send it out to publishers and agents. Expect rejection. But keep submitting and keep writing. A successful writer does not rely on one manuscript, no matter how brilliant it may be. He / she writes and keeps writing.
It's a discouraging job to break into, but it is possible. Just don't expect it to be easy, and don't expect it to happen overnight. |

I love being a writer. I came to this career choice later than most, and have no regrets. I would recommend to people considering this career that they have a good comfort level with uncertainty, with solitary work, and with working without structure.
MFA programs are an option to consider. I don't think they can create a writer from scratch, but where there is talent and drive, they offer an environment to develop where everyone around you takes writing seriously.
The biggest cons are that you can work for years on a single novel, earn no money or fame, and live on the thin edge of poverty. The pros are following your dreams, living a fulfilling and creative life, and doing work that really matters to you. Plus, no dress code. |

I am a freelance writer. I suppose that falls under the "Arts" category, although sometime I feel my creativity squandered by the need to pay bills! The good thing is that there are plenty of writing jobs available online if you look hard enough. There isn't much room to be creative at first, but if you stick with it, you'll see your original idea of being an "artist" realized. |

After being a stay-at-home mom for about a decade,I found that I needed to change my career. I am a graduate with Microbiology as my major subject. There was no way I could be away from home for the kind of hours needed for a career as a pathologist.
I had to look at something else.
Since I am a voracious reader, writing came naturally to me. I decided to be a writer. I was actually told that with writing, I would not even be able to cover the cost of my writing materals!
But, I was not going to give up.
After some research, I found that commercial writing paid the most. My research was based on the fact that my children were mesmerised by commercials on TV. This was in early 1980s when TV channels had just been introduced. Who were the creative brains behind these 50 second storylines? How did they manage to create such a hypnotic effect on my children? I couldn't break their habit of sitting zombie like in front of the TV.So, as cliches go, 'If you can't win them, you join them!'
I joined a creative writing workshop where I learnt advertising copywriting. I learnt how to write headlines, bodycopy, slogans and scripts for commercials.
Then I got the opportunity to write for an Advtg and Mktg. fortnightly from home. I began writing features about advtg. and mktg. strategies that led to specific campaigns.
This was a tremendous learning experience.I have now graduated to writing web content. I can also help promote websites by formulating company profiles, vision statements and mission statements.
This has got to be the most paying form of non-fiction writing, besides being most exciting. Nothing routine about this. Today you are writing about lipsticks, tomorrow about insurance.Also, being a niche writer, makes you develop an expertise in your chosen field.
I would definitely recommend this career to anyone wishing to pursue writing. Given the millions of websites on the internet, one can imagine the amount of written content needed. One need not be a literary giant. A good imagination and a passion for communication is all that is needed. With services that check your grammar and spellings, as in Word, things have become even easier.
In fact, this career can be a parallel career. You can share your expertise in any field to create infoproducts. Say, as E-books.
If I had a choice again, I would not start with any workshop, but start with blogging till I reach a glass ceiling. Then, one can always get advice from online forums and courses, because, for a writer, a published portfolio is his qualification.

Trying to make a living as a writer is difficult, but extremely rewarding. While I don't make all my income through my writing, I still consider myself a writer and introduce myself as a writer. To date, I have had six stories and poems published in various professional magazines. To see your name in print and to be actually paid to write is probably on the greatest moments of my life. As for the job itself, the opportunity to set your own schedule makes things a lot easier and fun.
The only downside I think about being a writer is you have to deal with a lot of rejection. Some of my best stories have gotten rejected time and time again, and it always hurts, especially when you're really proud of what you have. Nonetheless, I love being able to say I am a writer and would definitely recommend this career to anyone that loves to read/write. If I had the chance, I 'd definitely do it all over again! |

My advice for someone considering a career in the Arts is to be extremely diligent. The only way to succeed in the Arts, visual or otherwise, is to persist even in the face of seemingly-constant rejection with only rare glimpses of positive reinforcement. Nonetheless, I highly recommend this career path because of its extraordinary rewards, both personal and social, conceptual and visceral. I would absolutely make the choice to pursue this career path again. The pros of being in the Arts include a deeper connection to humanity and a sense of having one's finger on the pulse of contemporary life. The cons are that much of the rest of your time will be spent barely surviving economically. With the glut of pop cultural representations of artists and members of the artistic circles, there is little left to know about the private lives of those in the arts. Nonetheless, most would probably be surprised to know that it is possible to live a sane, well-rounded life even while barely clinging to existence both literally and metaphorically. |

If you are passionate about writing -- meaning you wouldn't know how to survive without writing -- then you should pursue this work. Only with passion will you be able to survive the pitfalls, because there are several. Work isn't always steady and you will have a LOT of rejection. But if you can handle that and keep honing your craft, writing is a career that is completely worth the effort. |
