I worked as a domestic violence victim advocate. I have to say that I really enjoyed my time as an advocate and would definitely do it again if I had the opportunity. Even though it is a great career, it is not for the faint of heart, the impatient person, the person who wears her/his heart on her/his sleeve. The career is full of frustration, stress, pressure, and sadness. You have to have a stable emotional state and a strong sense of right in order to help people. You need to be able to let people choose for themselves and not pressure people into doing what you believe is right. It is not easy to see someone go back to a violent relationship, but we have to let them make their own choices--help them empower themselves. Even with all of these difficulties, it is a rewarding job once in a while. Many would describe it as a thankless job, but the few cases that succeed make it all worth-while. |
