Career is Build&Integration engineer Build and integration is central to a s/w product development company, where features get continuously added into the product by many teams. System integrators ensure that the various components work together to meet the product functionality and targeted quality. Build engineers ensure that the latest s/w is built, and made available back to the teams for further development. Build skills include knowhow of build tools like Make, ANT, and be good at scripting technologies. Integration is about good understanding of object oriented concepts, component object model, interfaces etc. Build&integration also requires very strong software configuration management skills. Pros are the team is central to the organization and visibility and accountability is high...this can, ofcourse, get counter productive if these engineers mess up! Personally, I recommend this career, as I find it quite happening & challenging. |

I recommend my career as a Build & Integration engineer, software configuration manager, to others as well. Required skills in build include competence on software build tools (make, ANT)..expertise in scripting technologies like perl, python. Integration skills require good understanding of OO concepts, component object model, component interfaces, uml notation. SCM skills include knowledge of software configuration management concepts, process and tools like cvs, perforce. These roles are central to s/w product development life-cycles. Pros are high visibility and recognition. Cons are relatively high risk and accountability, in the event of failures. Mitigation is to put robust plans and processes in place. |

I'm a technical writer. I design and write online hypertext systems for computer software and web sites. I've done very well in this field. My best advice for those who think they'd like to become technical writers is to be sure that you:
1. Are precise and exacting. Attention to detail and an ability to mentally track consistency is absolutely vital to this work;
2. Can work well alone. Typically, the technical writer is a solo gig, so you must be sure that you thrive on a solitary work environment;
3. Can feel satisfaction without any positive feedback from - anyone. I call technical writers "the bastard children" of any corporation. The powers-that-be know that technical writers are needed, but not 100% sure why - after all, we all write and speak English. If you are a person who needs to know that your work is valued, this is not the career for you.
4. You must know how to write well in ENGLISH (if you are working in the US, that is) and possess great tact. Everyone thinks he or she can write, but the fact is, not everyone writes well. Especially software designers - urgh. The technical writer's ugly job is soothe egos while tidying up the unreadable.
What technical writing gives you is a lot of freedom. I'm at the point in my life where I can pretty much cherry-pick the work I accept. I get to work on all kinds of interesting projects - everything from transcriptions of interviews with fabulous people, to cutting edge web-based software applications. It is not a glamorous job, but if you always remember that you are the one person within an organization who speaks for the consumer, you can feel like a hero! |

As a self-employed computer maintenance person I install hardware and software, run diagnostics, and purchase materials for my clients' computers. The computer maintenance field is one that will remain an active one in the US because people will always need hel with their PC's, job security, therefore exists in this field. The education required varied from simply a highschool degree and computer experience up to a graduate degree, but you can probably make just as much money in the field of maintenance with the former. The upside to working on your own is that you get to set your own hours, and your own pay scale, the downside is obviously that there is no insurance and the amount of money you make varies from job to job and can range from several hundred one week to nothing the next. Unfortunatley even working for a cororate entity in maintenance provides for insurance and stedy pay, you often times will make no more than a cashier at McDonald's as the company takes the majority of the profit. My advice to anyone seeking this field is to go to a big city wher plnty of Maintenance jobs exist, getting hired by one and moonlighting to make extra money, if you do this it can be a rewarding and profitable experience. |
