I worked at Walmart for three years. It was horrible getting paid very little for a physically demanding job. I would never advise anyone for this career. The health benefits are horrible and expensive, and the people are rude. I would never do this again, given the choice. Find another job! I know in this economy it is hard to get anything, but it isn't worth it being in an unfair and dead-end job where no one respects you. |

I work in the Retail environment at a well known Australian supermarket. Whilst we do sell products, it is not my job to try to sell people products. For sure, I am involved in displaying products so people are more likely to buy them, but I am not required to communicate sales to customers. My actual position is a service assistant, which is quite different from a sales person.
I started in this position when I was 15 and still at secondary school. It was a great casual job which has over the years taught me many important life skills. It was also great for some casual income whilst I was at school. As I enjoyed what I did so much and was provided with many opportunities, I am still with the company today, 10 years down the track.
The industry and company intakes mostly school and university students because they are a cheaper hire, but if you have dedication and the right qualities you can move up the chain over the years.
The industry and company are also very flexible, which is one of the main reasons I am still there. Hence if I had my time over I would do it all the same.
Work hard and be intelligent with your choices and you will get somewhere in this industry. But be mindful, if you don't play your cards right, there are millions of other people out there who can do the same job and many of them at a cheaper rate. Get your foot in the door and keep it there, otherwise there really are no second chances in this economic environment. Also take what your given, if you reject work, again many others are lining up for the work and will gladly take it.

I am a cashier at a convenience store. I love my job, I have been there three years now. It gives you a chance to meet different people each and every day. It's has to be something that you like and you need to be a people person or you won''t qualify for this great job.You have your good days and you have your bad days. The main ingredient to being you at your job is to smile no matter how irritated a customer will make you. |
